Infographics for everyone

Jun 30, 2016

Many journalists from the Northwest have visited the seminars of the Danish expert on infographics Ole Rode  Jensen. This June the opportunity to "pump" the knowledge and skills was given to Murmansk journalists and students of journalism. For two days the representative of the Nordic Journalism Centre, lecturer of Danish school of journalism and media told and taught how to use free and accessible data visualization tools.

— I'll tell you about infographic everything I know the way I see it and my life experience tells me — the speaker started. Specifically for the seminar, Ole had created a site where he collected all the useful links and practical exercises on working with data visualization tools. By signing up, you can use free services.

The series of seminars "Data Visualization" organized jointly by the Regional Press Institute and the Nordic Journalistic Centre (financed by the Council of Ministers of the Nordic countries, coordinated by the Danish school of journalism and media).

The expert began with an interesting history. Once at a flea market in Denmark, among other ancient things he found the folder printed in the USSR back in the fifties. In the folder there was a real Soviet infographics: data on demography, economy, industry of the Soviet Union represented in visual form. For example, the national composition of the population of the USSR was presented in the form of hand-drawn male figures in national costumes. People were of different heights - depending on their number among all the country's inhabitants.

Ole  himself is not a journalist and not an artist by education. But his whole career he has been engaged in data visualization, since the time when infographics were painted by hand. So what qualities are needed to create a quality infographic?
According to the experts it implies:
— Counting: mathematics and geometry, knowledge of formulas for calculation;
— Drawing: beauty and clarity;
— Writing and to gathering journalistic competence;
— Organizing information correctly and clearly;
— using the solution repeatedly

For journalists working in electronic media or producing a blog it is useful to possess the services to create infographics. They can be placed as a separate material, as an illustration to the text, as part of a longread which is interesting not just to read but to click, examine, study.
